February 2009 Monthly Newsletter

To the Bible Quizzing family,

We enjoyed another great day of quizzing.  I’m glad for everyone who was able to be there.  It is fantastic to see so many of you who have been memorizing God’s Word.  Wasn’t that an awesome group of quizzers receiving their OMC awards?  It is also fantastic to watch so many of you “grow up” in your faith and really take hold of it for yourselves.

Worship and Devotions:  A special thanks to Louisa Jobes and her family for leading us in worship and to Josiah Faas for leading us into the Word for devotions.  I very much appreciate the focused beginning to our quiz meet that this provides.  We still have openings for someone to bring devotions in March.  Please contact me to volunteer.

Setup and Cleanup: We had a tremendous amount of help with setting up and putting everything back together afterwards.  A very heart-felt “Thank You” to all of you who helped with that.  For March, we still need a group to come early and help with the setup, and we need many hands to clean up after the pizza party.  In fact, if it is handy for you to bring a vacuum sweeper with you, please do that.  There is a lot of floor to be swept there, and having several vacuums would help greatly.

Facebook: Jim Benson introduced us to the Facebook group he has started for Bible Quizzing.  Feel free to join this group.

Chicago Tournament: The tournament is March 27-29 at First Baptist Church in Geneva, Illinois, where it has been held for the last few years.  We have teams going from each league, and there is still room for more.  If you want to get a team together by the end of February, you can still do so for the $65 team registration fee.  If you want to do it later than that, the registration fee jumps to $80.  Everyone who is going to Chicago will need to meet at our next quiz meet to finalize registration, transportation, and hotel accommodations.

Verse-A-Thon: I’d like to encourage quizzers to participate in this, to help raise funds for the quizzing program, and especially towards your Chicago expenses.  You can turn in the money you raise at any time, but in order to have it go towards your expenses for the Chicago Tournament, you need to turn it in by the time we leave for the tournament.  Please contact me if you didn’t pick up a sign-up sheet.

Coaches Meeting: I’d like to have a Coaches Meeting at some point during our March quiz.  We’ve made some changes this year that I think have improved things, and I’d like any comments you may have about that, as well as any suggestions for things we could or should do to improve the program next year.  Coaches, quizmasters, and scorekeepers, please be thinking about this ahead of time and plan to attend that meeting so we can hear from all of you.

Finances: We haven’t had many donations this year, but we’ve also been doing fairly well at keeping our expenses down so we’ve been in pretty good shape.  But the end of the year is coming, and we’ll need to purchase trophies and OMC awards,  pay for our insurance, and for advertizing/publicity next year.  We’ve got about $900 available for this at the moment, and it’s not going to be enough.  If you are willing to help us with a donation at our next quiz, it would be greatly appreciated.  You can send donations to the Youth For Christ office with “Bible Quizzing” designated on the memo line if you’d like a receipt; otherwise you can give them directly to me (checks made out to Youth For Christ Bible Quizzing).  Thank you very much for however you are able to help out.

March Quiz:  Our last quiz meet of the season is coming up on March 14, at Emmanuel Baptist Church at 1:00 pm.  Points earned that day will be multiplied by 200% when accumulated toward the yearly total.  The A/B League will quiz over Luke 7:18 - 8:56 and 12:1-59, and the Little League over Luke chapter 24.  For those of you who picked up an A/B Blue Sheet, it incorrectly listed the material as simply 7:18 - 12:59.  It is correct on the website.

We will close out the year with a Pizza Party at the church, for all who would like to attend.  Besides the pizza, it'll be a fun way to celebrate the completion of the quizzing year together.  The cost will be $4 per person.  When we start the day, we'll need a count of everyone planning to stay, so please make sure that everyone you represent is accounted for.  There will be a sign-up sheet on the information table.

Besides the Pizza Party, I’d like to think of the March quiz as a kind of “open house” to encourage potential new quizzers and families to see what quizzing is like.  Please encourage people you know to feel free to drop in throughout the afternoon, and perhaps especially for the closing quiz and for pizza.  And if you know of visitors who would be staying for pizza, please include them in your count and let them know that pizza is on us that evening.  We need new quizzers in both the A/B and Little Leagues, so please try to make the most of this.

Anniversary Celebration: Our first quiz of the next season will be October 10.  The Anniversary Celebration will be that weekend, starting Friday night October 9.  We want everyone to join us on Friday night.  We’ll keep filling in details as we go along, but we want this to be a special event for everyone.  Please be planning to be part of this event.
